General
Q: How do I get my Guard Card/What are the requirements?A: Take Phase 1 in the Powers to Arrest Course for $160 which includes the required Live Scan finger printing and test. Send the paperwork to BSIS with a $50 money order for processing. Once the background check is approved the state will mail the permit in about 2-8 weeks. Work in the field can not begin until applicant is approved by BSIS. If access to the internet is available a temporary permit may be printed off the BSIS website to work under once the application has been approved
Q: What should I bring to class?
A: A Picture ID, a black ink pen & paper, and the class fee.
Q: Do I have to pre-register for class?
A: No. You may show up at the posted date & time for the class.
Permits
Q: I lost my permit, how do I get a replacement?A: You can come into the office to pick up a Request for a Replacement Permit form to send to BSIS.
Q: Can I carry my Baton/Pepper Spray/Firearm while my application is processing?
A: No. All permits must be on your person before you can carry. Even if it is in processing.
Q: Do I need a permit to carry a Taser?
A: No. Though it is recommended to receive training before you do so. No we do not provide training for it at this time.
Firearms
Q: How do I renew my firearm permit?A: A 2 Hour refresher course is now required by the state PRIOR to the 4th requal. All the necessary paperwork is given at the time of the 4th requal to mail to the state.
Q: Do I need my own firearm to take the firearm permit class?
A: No.
Q: If I have my own firearm should I bring it to the class?
A: NO. Do NOT bring the firearm to the class. Though you may bring it to the range to use for qualification.
