Get Started in the Security Field
What you need to know:
- You must be at least 18 years of age
- Picture ID is required for each class
- A full criminal history background check must be cleared and approved by the FBI & Cal. Dept. of Justice
- 40 Hours of training must be completed
- 8 Hours initially for the application process (Phase I)
- 16 Hours within 30 days of employment in the Security field (Phase II)
- 16 Hours within 6 months of employment in the Security field(Phase III)
- Assembly Bill 2880 now requires all guards to complete an 8 hour refresher course every year
Advisements
When sending forms and fees to the B.S.I.S. the following guidelines are
suggested
- Payments can be made by personal check or money order. (Bank or US Postal) This will aid in your
paperwork being processed in a timely manner
- Send all paperwork Certified Mail/Return Receipt requested
- Maintain all copies of receipts for your paperwork
Once the Bureau has received the online application and criminal history
clearances, the cleared security guard will appear on the Bureau's Web site.
The Security Guard, Private Patrol Operator or Training Facility can verify the
Bureau's approval by checking the Bureau's "Verify a License" at
http://www.dca.ca.gov/bsis/lookup.htm.
Once the Security Guard registration has been cleared and appears on the
Bureau's web site, a screen-printout from the web site may be used as a
temporary Security Guard registration, and the Guard can be placed on
assignment. The actual Security Guard registration will be mailed to the
applicant and should be received in 4-10 weeks.
An unarmed Security Guard placed on assignment must have the following
documents on his/her person.
- A screen printout of the Bureau's approval obtained from the Bureau's web
site OR a valid Security Guard card.
- A valid photo identification.
